LA RÉUNION ISLAND ULTIMATE GUIDE
We just got back from the most insane trip to Réunion Island and this place totally blew my mind. It’s this little French island floating off the coast of Madagascar, and it’s packed with everything from active volcanoes to lush jungle trails and black sand beaches. One minute you’re sipping a café in a cute Creole town, the next you’re hiking through ancient lava fields or flying over waterfalls in a helicopter. It’s got this wild, untouched energy but still feels super safe and laid-back. If you’re into nature, adventure and that off the beaten track island vibe, Réunion is a total dream. Here’s what I got up to and everything you need to see.

2. Hike to Piton de la Fournaise

Hiking to the summit of Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes located on Réunion Island, is an unforgettable adventure through a surreal, otherworldly landscape. The trail begins at the Pas de Bellecombe, offering sweeping views into the caldera before descending into the Enclos Fouqué, a vast lava field shaped by centuries of eruptions. As you navigate hardened lava flows, craters, and volcanic rock formations, the stark beauty and raw power of nature become unmistakably clear. Though the hike can be challenging due to its rugged terrain and changing weather, reaching the summit rewards you with a breathtaking view into the main crater and a profound sense of awe at standing atop a living volcano.
3. Drive on the lava road

Driving the Lava Road on Réunion Island is a must-do experience, offering a dramatic journey through fields of solidified lava from past eruptions of Piton de la Fournaise the last one being in 2007. Hiking the Cirque de Mafate over three days from Col des Bœufs to La Nouvelle, then on to Marla and back, is the perfect way to experience one of Réunion Island’s most remote and beautiful regions. Starting at the Col des Bœufs, you descend through misty forests into La Nouvelle, where you can spend the first night in a cozy mountain gîte. Day two takes you through stunning highland scenery to the quiet village of Marla, nestled beneath dramatic peaks, perfect for a second night of rest. The final day brings you back to your starting point, completing a loop filled with panoramic views, river crossings, and authentic Creole hospitality in a unique, car-free paradise.

A helicopter tour over Réunion Island is one of the top things to do for breathtaking views of its dramatic landscapes, including the active Piton de la Fournaise volcano, lush cirques like Mafate and Cilaos, and towering waterfalls hidden deep in the rainforest. BEST TIME TO VISIT RÉUNION ISLAND
The best time to visit Réunion Island is during the dry, cooler season from May to November, when the weather is ideal for hiking, exploring volcanoes, and enjoying the beaches without the intense heat or risk of cyclones. This period offers clear skies, lower humidity, and comfortable temperatures, perfect for outdoor adventures across the island’s diverse landscapes
HOW TO GET TO RÉUNION ISLAND
Réunion Island is accessible by air, with the main point of entry being Roland Garros Airport (RUN) near Saint-Denis, the capital. Direct international flights primarily come from France (Paris-Orly and Paris-CDG) via airlines like Air France, French Bee, and Air Austral. There are also regional connections from South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, and the Seychelles, making Réunion easy to add to an Indian Ocean itinerary. No visa is required for South African or EU passport holders for stays of up to 90 days, and the island uses the Euro, as it’s an overseas department of France
GETTING AROUND THE ISLAND
Getting around Réunion Island is part of the adventure—and choosing the right transport depends on how you want to explore. Here’s a breakdown to help you plan:
1. Renting a Car – The Most Flexible Option
If you’re planning to explore the island’s dramatic cirques, coastal roads, and volcanic peaks, renting a car is highly recommended. Roads are generally in good condition and well-signposted, but some mountain routes can be narrow and winding. To rent a car, you’ll need a valid driver’s license (an international license is required), be at least 21 years old (some companies require 23+), and have a visa or mastercard card for the deposit. Parking is usually easy in towns, and having your own wheels means you can chase waterfalls, sunrises at Piton de la Fournaise, and hidden beach coves at your own pace.Remember they drive on the left side of the road there.
2. Private Transfers & Taxis – Easy but Pricey
For short stays or airport transfers, private shuttles and taxis are convenient but can be pricey, especially for long distances. It’s best to book in advance, particularly for early or late flights. Some hotels and resorts offer their own transfer services, so check ahead to save time and stress. Taxis don’t always run on meters, so agree on a fare before setting off.
3. Public Transport – Affordable but Limited
Réunion has a decent network of public buses (Car Jaune) that connect major towns and popular areas, especially along the coast. They’re cheap, reliable, and a good option if you’re staying in one place and doing short day trips. However, service is limited on weekends and public holidays, and buses often don’t reach remote or mountainous areas, so they’re not ideal for full island exploration.
Pro Tip: If you plan to mix it up—using public transport in towns and renting a car for a few days in the mountains—it’s totally doable and can help manage your budget. Just plan ahead to make the most of your time
OVERNIGHT HIKES IN RÉUNION
If you’re looking for an unforgettable hiking experience on Réunion Island, the overnight hike through Cirque de Mafate should be at the top of your list. This remote volcanic amphitheater, only accessible by foot or helicopter, is a dream for adventure lovers. I recently did a two-day loop starting at Col des Bœufs, hiking down to Marla, sleeping over in one of the charming gîtes, and then continuing on to La Nouvelle before hiking back. It’s about 18 kilometers in total, with some serious ups and downs—so a moderate level of fitness is needed—but the scenery is absolutely next-level.
Staying in mountain gîtes in Mafate is part of the magic. These simple but cozy guesthouses offer beds, hot showers, and usually a hearty Creole style dinner and breakfast. Expect to pay between €50–70 per person for a night including meals. It’s the perfect way to connect with local hospitality while being completely off the grid, no roads, no cars, no WiFi ( although you have signal all the time ) , just stars and silence.
What to pack for the Mafate hike: proper hiking boots, warm layers (it gets cold at night!), a rain jacket, sunscreen, a headlamp, 2L of water per day, snacks, and cash (there are no ATMs in the Cirque). You’ll also want a small backpack and a camera to capture those unreal mountain views.
This Réunion Island hiking trail is a must-do for anyone who loves nature, mountains, and authentic island experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just up for a bit of a challenge, spending the night in Cirque de Mafate is pure magic and 100% worth adding to your Réunion travel itinerary.
